‘Tis the season to celebrate Small Business Saturday

If you plan to celebrate Small Business Saturday this year, don’t forget to stop by The Inn at Market Square.

Nestled in the downtown Zion hotel is Callie's Coffee Bar, where patrons can find one-of-a-kind gifts made by local artists, including wearable art, jewelry, souvenirs, children's items and more.

Callie's also carries the latest in Chicago memorabilia from Cubs hoodies to skyline keychains, a complete line of J. R. Watkins body care products, as well as imported olive oils, soaps and cheeses.

The Small Business Saturday initiative was launched by American Express in 2010 to help the smaller, locally-owned boutiques and restaurants who were hurting from an economy in recession.

Since then, it has been held on the weekend after Thanksgiving, anchored between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Many consumers use the nationally-recognized holiday to skip the big-box retailers and instead spend their dollars locally. That’s because small businesses can offer a bevy of unique items for those hard-to-shop-for people on their holiday gift lists.

Just want to sit and grab a quick cup of coffee at Callie's Coffee Bar on Nov. 24? That also helps the Small Business Saturday initiative. At Callie's, patrons will find Intelligentsia brand fresh-roasted, single source coffees from around the world, as well as espressos, frappuccinos, and real fruit smoothies. Looking for a bite to eat? Callie’s has that too. The menu features cheesecake, parfaits, breads, baked goods, as well as a luncheon menu of soups, salads, sandwiches and specialty pizza.

If you plan to start your holiday shopping soon, consider participating in November’s Small Business Saturday initiative. Doing so can help make the holidays bright for your loved ones as well as the small business owners in your community.
