ROUND LAKE PARK – A Hainesville man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, a violation of Scott’s Law and child endangerment Nov. 20 after he crashed into a Round Lake Park Police squad car, police said.
About 7:40 p.m. Nov. 20, Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Hainesville Road just north of Oak Avenue, Round Lake Park, to investigate a traffic crash. Deputies found that the driver of a 2002 Ford SUV, Alejandro Gonzalez-Maldonado, 49, of the 300 block of Pineview Drive, Hainesville, had sideswiped a squad car as well as the vehicle the police officer had pulled over, the news release stated.
The Round Lake Park police officer had the driver of a 1993 Dodge pickup pulled over to the side of southbound Hainesville Road. The emergency lights on the officer’s squad car were on when the incident occurred. Fortunately, the police officer was speaking to the driver of the Dodge from the Dodge’s front passenger side window and not the driver’s window, police said.
As the officer was speaking to the driver of the Dodge, Gonzalez-Maldonado, who was traveling south, sideswiped the driver’s side of the squad car, then sideswiped the driver’s side of the Dodge, the release stated.
Deputies determined that Gonzalez-Maldonado, who was transporting a child under the age of 10, was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and taken to the Lake County Jail, where he was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, child endangerment, a Scott’s Law violation, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, improper lane use and expired registration.
Gonzalez-Maldonado was released on a $3,000 recognizance bond pending a court date of Dec. 18.
