Victim identified in fatal crash in Volo

An 18-year-old woman who was killed in a rollover crash Wednesday morning on Route 12 in Volo has been identified as Magdalene Bonefas of Volo, according to a news release from the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Lake County Sheriff’s Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that Bonefas had been driving a 2000 GMC pickup truck north on Route 12 just north of Case Road when she drove off the east side of the road for unknown reasons and overcorrected, which likely caused the vehicle to leave the road.

Covelli said she had not been wearing her seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper said Bonefas’ autopsy indicated that she had died of blunt-force injuries caused by the crash. Toxicology results are pending and the investigation into her death continues, Cooper said.

An 18-year-old passenger from Wauconda suffered injuries not considered life-threatening in the crash and was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Covelli said.

Both were seasonal employees of Wauconda School District 118 and recent Wauconda High School graduates, according to a release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
