VOLO – A fertilizer truck on May 18 leaked about 200 gallons of liquid fertilizer into a storm drain, authorities said.
About 10:10 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the intersection of North Cornerstone Drive and Remington Drive for a reported chemical spill. Deputies arrived and found a TruGreen fertilizer truck, which had leaked about 200 gallons of liquid fertilizer into a storm drain, according to a news release.
Fox Lake Fire and hazmat teams determined the fertilizer that leaked into the storm drain didn’t pose an immediate hazard to the surrounding community. Crews dammed the storm drains in an effort to prevent the fertilizer from flowing farther into the drains, police said.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Lake County Health Department and the Village of Volo were made aware of the situation.
The cause of the leak appeared to be a faulty container holding the fertilizer.
