The McHenry County Sheriff's Office responded to a fatal three-vehicle accident on Monday morning outside Richmond.

The driver of a van who died in a three-vehicle crash in Richmond was identified as a 42-year-old Lake Villa man Tuesday.

The 28-year-old passenger of the van, from Ingleside, remains in serious condition.

Emergency personnel responded to the crash on Route 173 at Keystone Road in Richmond Township at 7:51 a.m. Tuesday.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a 2007 Terex Crane, driven by a 37-year-old Hebron man, was traveling east on Route 173 approaching Keystone, according to a news release. A 2017 Nissan NV Cargo van, driven by the 42-year-old, was traveling north on Keystone Road approaching Route 173 and had a stop sign.

The Nissan failed to yield to traffic, and pulled onto Route 173, and the crane struck the Nissan, causing both vehicles to move into the westbound lane of traffic on Route 173. They then struck a 2017 Jeep Wrangler, driven by a 19-year-old Richmond woman, who was waiting to turn south onto Keystone Road, according to the release.

The passenger of the Nissan was extricated from the vehicle and flown by Flight for Life to Advocate Condell in Libertyville. The driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead on scene. The drivers of the Terex Crane and Jeep were not taken to the hospital.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Richmond Police, Illinois State Police, Richmond Township Fire and Rescue, Walworth MD-1, Hebron Township Fire and Rescue and Wonder Lake Township Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the scene of the accident. Route 173 and Keystone Road was closed for about seven hours.

The Sheriff’s Office’s Major Crash Investigation Unit and McHenry County Coroner’s Office is investigating the crash.
