FREMONT TOWNSHIP – Two women were killed June 8 as a result of a three-vehicle crash along Fairfield Road in Fremont Township, police said.
About 9:05 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Fairfield Road north of Route 60, Fremont Township, for a traffic crash with injuries, police said.
A preliminary investigation showed that a Ford E350, driven by a 51-year-old Round Lake Beach man, was traveling south on Fairfield Road, north of Route 60. For an unknown reason, his vehicle crossed the double-yellow-striped median into the northbound lanes. The Ford struck the driver’s side of a northbound Honda Odyssey, driven by a 42-year-old Hainesville man. The Ford then struck a northbound Kia Forte, driven by a 56-year-old Ingleside woman, head-on.
The driver of the Kia was pronounced deceased at the scene. A front-seat passenger in the Kia, a 64-year-old Round Lake Beach woman, also was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford and driver of the Honda were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene. The women killed in the crash were identified as Barbara Gaulke, 56, of Ingleside, and Sandra Forscht, 64, of Round Lake. Both died of blunt force trauma, according to preliminary autopsy results.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit. Crash investigators will work to determine why the driver of the Ford crossed the median into the wrong lane of traffic.
