ROUND LAKE BEACH – A 20-year-old resident of unincorporated Round Lake has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the May 17 death of a woman in Round Lake Beach, police said.
Alonzo Campos Jr., 20, of the 24500 block of West Passavant Avenue, unincorporated Round Lake, was charged May 20 with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Mariana Castro-Tellez, 48, according to a news release.
About 4:40 a.m. May 17, Round Lake Beach police officers were dispatched to a home in the 1500 block of Cherokee Drive for a report of shots fired. When they arrived, they found Castro-Tellez dead in the residence.
An investigation by Round Lake Beach Police and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force revealed that Campos entered Castro-Tellez’s home with a BB gun. Once inside, police said Campos confronted Castro-Tellez.
Police said Castro-Tellez appears to have been shot several times with the BB gun before she was stabbed with a knife. Police were called to the scene when a family member heard the BB gun being discharged. Campos fled the scene and was taken into custody that evening, police said.
An autopsy by the Lake County Coroner’s Office showed that Castro-Tellez died of sharp force trauma. Toxicology is pending.
Campos was scheduled for an initial court hearing May 21.
