ANTIOCH – A Round Lake Park police officer has been charged with domestic battery in connection with an incident involving his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter, police said.
About 11:45 a.m. April 5, Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to meet a Department of Children and Family Services agent who was investigating a report that a 5-year-old girl may have been battered by her mother’s boyfriend, according to a news release. The information had come from a mandated reporter.
An investigation revealed that Wayman G. Vela, 55, of the 21600 block of West Grass Lake Road, near Antioch, struck his girlfriend’s daughter numerous times on the lower back with a paddle, police said. This action caused injuries and the child was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment and evaluation.
Vela is employed as a police officer in the Village of Round Lake Park. Round Lake Park police officials cooperated throughout the investigation and arrest. Vela was arrested April 6. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved one count of domestic battery (Class A misdemeanor). Vela was being held in the Lake County Jail on $10,000 bail.
