LIBERTYVILLE – Authentic Greek cuisine comes to Lake County on Nov. 8 and 9 when St. Demetrios Church presents its Fall Greek Food Festival.
From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the St. Demetrios women’s charitable organization offers its Athenian Kitchen and Bake Sale at the church, 1400 O’Plaine Road in Libertyville, between Routes 137 (Buckley Road) and 120 (Belvidere Road).
The feast starts with roast lamb, gyros or Greek chicken and ends with pastries such as baklava, nut cake and melt-in-your-mouth cookies. In between are sides such as cheese puffs and spinach pie.
“The tastes are unique,” Irene Booras of St. Demetrios said. “It’s all handmade and represents the finest of Greek villages and islands. The pulled roast pork and dolmades [stuffed grape leaves] are both unique and delicious.”
Her favorite dessert is a honey-infused custard that is baked between pastry leaves and butter. “You’ll love it, even if the name is hard to pronounce – galaktobouriko,” she said.
Takeout orders are encouraged, and many people order ahead. Call 224-513-5530 for takeout orders.
The event is sponsored by the St. Demetrios Philoptochos Society. Proceeds go to support people in need in Lake County and other areas.
