GURNEE – On July 24, Gurnee Park District opened eight new pickleball courts at O’Plaine Park (O’Plaine and Russell avenues) with a ribbon-cutting.
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., about 200 Gurnee community members came out to play as well as learn the fastest-growing paddle sport in the world.
Park Board President Jim Goshorn and Executive Director Susie Kuruvilla welcomed the crowd. Refreshments and prizes completed the celebration.
Features of the new courts will include eight regulation sized courts, each court is fenced off from neighboring court, close proximity parking, windscreens will be installed, and access to restroom and drinking fountain.
The courts are open to the public during daylight hours.
Those new to pickleball can rent equipment at Hunt Club Park Community Center or Viking Park Community Center. Equipment can be used at all indoor and outdoor locations. Equipment rental is free.
In addition, Gurnee Park District looks forward to hosting the first of many tournaments Sept. 29. This doubles tournament will include both recreation and competitive divisions.
