LINCOLNSHIRE – Marriott Theatre is presenting audiences with an early treat for the holidays via its finely tuned production of "Newsies," a Tony Award-winning new American musical smartly directed and choreographed by Alex Sanchez.
Based on a 1992 Disney film,“Newsies” was originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions. The current adaptation features music by Alan Menkin, lyrics by Jack Feldman and book by Harvey Fierstein.
The fictionalized show is set in New York City. It was inspired by a real-life newsboy strike in 1899 that pitted skinflint publishers against exploited newsboys facing impossible odds to survive. A David-versus-Goliath struggle ensues, and things look bleak for the disorganized newsboys.
Leading the large cast are Patrick Rooney as Jack Kelly, Eliza Palasz as Katherine and Kevin Gudahl as Joseph Pulitzer. Eliza Palasz as Katherine Plumber sings up a storm ("Watch What Happens" ).
Meanwhile, keep an eye on the agile, high-flying ensemble -- whether they re doing intricate dance moves or multiple flips, their performance is guaranteed to dazzle.
“Newsies” introduces eight new songs by the original Menken and Feldman team while keeping cherished numbers from the film: “Seize the Day, King of New York” and “Carrying the Banner,” among others.
Credit Sally Dolembo for her vintage costume designs; Kevin Depinet for an effective set; Jesse Klug, lighting; and Robert E. Gilmartin, sound.
“Newsies” offers heartwarming entertainment just the ticket this time of year.
