St. Patrick Catholic School in Wadsworth hosted a diaper drive during Catholic Schools Week for Twice As Nice Mother & Child, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing help and hope to families in crisis. Students were encouraged to bring disposable diaper donations to school every day during that week to support the service project.

The drive evolved into a school-wide competition with an incentive of a pizza party and dress down day for the class that collected the most diapers. The school ended up collecting 7,419 diapers in just one week, according to a news release from the school.

First place went to Mrs. Parduhn’s fifth grade class with 732 diapers collected. Second place went to Mrs. McKinnon’s eighth grade class with 608 diapers collected. Third place went to Mrs. Uko’s third grade class with 580 diapers collected.

St. Patrick School’s mission is to provide a rigorous academic program that includes faith development, according to the news release. Instilling morals and values is integrated throughout all that is taught, especially service to others in need.

“Service is a tenant of Catholic education and that is the reason that St. Patrick School chose Twice As Nice Mother & Child as the charity the school community would promote during Catholic Schools Week,” Mary Vitulli, the school principal, said in the news release. The staff and students were very excited about all of the activities that took place during Catholic Schools Week. This year was extra special because the school recently celebrated its 60th anniversary of excellence in Catholic education."

As a certified diaper bank and member of the National Diaper Bank Network, Twice As Nice Mother & Child provides over 100,000 diapers to Lake County families every year. Diaper need affects 1 in 3 families. The organization helps families by providing diapers at no charge so that they can keep their children clean, dry and healthy.

“We are so grateful that St. Patrick School selected us as their charity partner for Catholic Schools Week this year,” Ann Marie Mathis, founder and executive director of Twice As Nice Mother & Child, said in the news release. “We knew that the school would not only collect a lot of diapers for our diaper bank, but also help to raise awareness about diaper need and how many families are affected by it. When families are unable to afford diapers for their children, they are often faced with the choice between buying diapers, paying bills or getting groceries. That is a choice that no family should have to make.”
