Ravinia 2016 season still has much to offer

HIGHLAND PARK – It’s mid-August and summer is fast fading. Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross and a host of others already have put in appearances at the ongoing 2016 Ravinia Festival. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra also has demonstrated its exquisite talent on several occasions, including the Aug. 9 concert featuring Leonard Bernstein’s “The Age of Anxiety (Symphony No. 2)” and Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73.”

But music fans needn’t be deterred. Many notable performances still remain on the busy outdoor park’s calender.

The CSO returns Aug. 17 with “You’re the Top,” commemorating Cole Porter’s 125th birthday. Two other CSO programs follow: “Perlman Plays Beethoven” on Aug. 20 and “Tchaikovsky Spectacular on Aug. 21.

That’s just for starters.

Judy Collins delivers “A Love Letter to Stephen Sondheim” on Aug.18. The following Thursday, John Fogerty takes the stage, and on Sept. 3, it’s blues singer Bonnie Raitt’s turn in the limelight.
