Crystal Lake teen injured in head-on crash that killed Wauconda woman

Hawthorn Woods police say 19-year-old might have fallen asleep at wheel

HAWTHORN WOODS – A 60-year-old Wauconda woman died in a crash Tuesday after Hawthorn Woods police said a 19-year-old Crystal Lake man might have fallen asleep and crossed the center line, striking the woman's car head-on.

Police said the Crystal Lake man, who they have not named, was driving a 2002 Honda CRV west on Old McHenry Road near Redwood Lane when struck a 2008 Mazda 3 being driven by Ewa Lang. A Hawthorn Woods police officer discovered the crash east of Redwood Lane about 9:50 p.m., according to a news release from police.

Lang was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other passengers and no witnesses to the crash, police said.

A Lake Zurich Fire Department crew transported the Crystal Lake man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police do not suspect that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, but toxicology reports are pending.

The Hawthorn Woods Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team is investigating the crash.
