2012 Fire Prevention Theme: ‘Have Two Ways Out!’
Last week Naval Station Great Lakes and the Great Lakes Fire Department, as part of Fire Prevention Week and in keeping with this years’ theme “Have Two Ways Out!,” toured the Child Day Care Centers, Forrestal School. And later this month, the firefighters will visit the James A. Lovell Daycare Center to teach children the importance of fire safety, having an escape plan, and a designated meeting place in the event of a fire or other catastrophic event. The kids also got a first hand look at Engine 1912 and the equipment used by firefighters.
In 2010 the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reported that every 85 seconds fires were reported that resulted in the killing of 2,640 people and injuring 13,350. During that week they encouraged families across the country to prioritize fire escape planning and practice and added the following fire safety tips:
• Make a map of your home; mark a door and window that can be used to get out of every room.
• Choose a meeting place outside in front of your home.
• Have a grown-up sound the smoke alarm and practice your escape plan.
• Practice your escape plan twice a year.
