LFHCC sailors volunteer to assist at benefit 5K Run
Sailors from the James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) continued their tradition of volunteerism when 37 members of the center donated their time at the annual Chicago Dash 5K Run to benefit breast and ovarian cancer, on July 27 at 6:30 p.m.
The FHCC volunteers, organized by HM1 Igin Ismat, distributed water, bananas and popsicles to the runners, took care of their gear while they ran, and set up and took down tables. Lunch was provided for volunteers who each received a T-shirt and sports bag.
“They treated us well,” said FHCC volunteer HM2 Nathan Ko, who took photos at the event.
“Volunteerism has been part of the FHCC sailors’ culture,” said Ismat. “We helped out at a lot of races in the past, and we’ll do more in the future as well.
“It was my pleasure to take my sailors out to Chicago, and expose the Navy to the community in a positive way. It was a great race and we all had a good time.”
A bike route was used for the race that was held at the lakefront. Volunteers were given free tickets to the post-race party, on the Columbia Yacht Club’s Ship, which took place from 7 to 9 p.m.
