Eighth annual event hits a ‘home run’ for sailors
You could not ask for better weather last Wednesday as Galley 535 hosted the 8th annual “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” The event — sponsored by Naval Station Great Lakes, Goodwill and the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department — served more than 2,343 inside and on the outdoor patio.
Hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, corn on the cob, deviled eggs, corn dogs, a nacho bar, a full salad bar, cotton candy and ice cream bars were served, and for the first time, roasted corn.
Activities included a home-run derby, a Tri-Cycle race, and volleyball. MWR provided an inflatable sports arena baseball pitch and baseball trivia spinning wheel where candy prizes were given for the correct answers.
“This was a absolutely wonderful event, “ noted Cmdr. Mary Blankenship, executive officer, Training Support Center (TSC). “Galley 535 should be proud of putting on such a wonderful event for the sailors.”
Greg Wright, Naval Station Great Lakes food service officer said, “I think the students have a really good time and it is a nice break during lunchtime. The galley staff loves putting this on for the sailors.”
Three sailors received baseball tickets to Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cub, and Milwaukee Brewer games courtesy of Goodwill.
