CSCSU sailors volunteer for Habitat for Humanity
Sailors from Center For Surface Combat Systems Unit (CSCSU) spent five hours working at the Habitat For Humanity ReStore in Gurnee, Ill. on June 14.
Volunteers included: IC1 Alonzo L. McClendon, OS1 Daniel A. Grevillius, GM1 William G. Armstrong, ET1 Travis Butler, FC1 Mitch A. Vanderpool, and OS2 Hassan Dotson.
“We worked side-by-side with their staff and volunteers and people who are getting homes,” said event coordinator McClendon. “It was pretty cool.
“We helped set things up and organized supplies in their warehouse that are used in the building of homes,” he said, explaining that materials donated to Habitat are turned around and used for building the homes. Items are also sold with the money going back into construction.
“We measured, put prices on items, placed them on palettes, rearranged shelves, put doors up and hardware on them, and put up exit signs for safety in the warehouse. It was pretty cool.”
ICC(SW/AW) Phillip Baker, CSCS command outreach coordinator, noted that, “We reach out, one project at a time, trying to give the sailors community awareness and develop team building within the command.”
