Round Lake Beach park addition now open to public

ROUND LAKE BEACH – Three years of redevelopment work will finally come to a culmination as Round Lake Beach celebrates the opening of its newest park addition.

The public is invited to attend the second dedication of Lakefront Park at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6, near the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and Beachview Drive, in Round Lake Beach.

"Lakefront Park has been established and has been there, but they've done an addition to it," said Monica Marr, building facilitator and business liaison for the Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center.

Mayor Rich Hill and other officials will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the completion of the second phase of a redevelopment project in the area, Marr said. The addition to Lakefront Park has been dubbed Beach Park and includes a new bridge that crosses a newly dredged channel from the old to new sections.

It also boasts a new playground, two new shelters, two handicapped accessible fishing piers and a paved asphalt, interpretive trail.

The village received funding for the addition from the state of Illinios' Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development Program, said public works director Keith Neitzke. The village had been purchasing property by the lake for a number of years, and with the matching $400,000 state grant, work has finally been completed.

"What we did was they purchased all the properties down there, and we've completed the park with wetlands and parking lots for people to have access," Neitzke said. "It's a really nice place down there right now."

The last part of the restoration project will include the resurfacing of roads near the park, including new curbs and gutters, Neitzke said.

Work will start this summer and should be completed by winter, he said.

The ceremony will include tours of the park and refreshments, Marr said, as well as give-away prizes for those that walk the entire park.
